Nutrition: Label Carb Confusion

I have noted on many ‘health’ food labels confusing numbers about the carb content of the product.

My original understanding about ‘net carbs’ is that this represents ‘all carbs’ minus fiber. But numbers are really not adding up if this is the case.

A recent label on a protein replacement meal showed 36 grams of carbs, 2 grams of Fiber, and a claim in bold that there were only 3 net carbs!!!!

Turns out that sugar-alcohols fill the gap. 1 gram of sugar alcohol only has 2 calories and has no glycemic effect (Does not cause insulin spike) and thus manufacturers do not have to include it in the nutrition label.

One learns something new every day.


A Fish Called Wanda Movie Review (9/10)

Summary:

A gang of four thieves pulls off a massive diamond heist only to double cross each other aiming to keep the loot to themselves. After Wanda (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Otto (Kevin Kline) report George, the leader, to the police, they are shocked to find out that George is one step ahead and has already hidden the diamonds in an unknown location. Wanda decides to seduce Archie (John Cleese), George lawyer, into disclosing the diamonds location to her while, Otto, her idiotic-insanely-jealous-american-with-blind-hatred-to-the-brits boyfriend, tries to extract the info from stuttering Ken (Michael Palin), as this latter is the only gang member George trusts enough to potentially confide in.

Week 4 Ends

Today is Day 4 of week 4. Most of my numbers at the gym this week remained the same with the exceptions of some positive changes:

Incline Press: 120 lbs vs 110 lbs last week

Seated Row: 110 lbs vs. 90 lbs last week

Triceps Extension: 90 lbs vs 75 lbs last week

Leg Press: 315 lbs vs. 270 lbs last week

Leg Extension: 70 lbs vs. 60 lbs last week

I am quite pleased and relieved by the progress. Things are going well. Goal is more beyond reach.


Week 4 Begins

I was again ecstatic today as I noted another 3 lbs drop in weight. Wonderful.

My chest and biceps numbers today remain unchanged with the exception of lifting an additional 10 pounds on the incline press (120 lbs vs. 110 lbs last week).

I am still doing 4 sets of 10 reps each (plus 1 warmup set) for each exercise.

Things are looking good.


Week 3 Ends

Today my third week of training ended with Shoulders and Abs. There has been no additional progress beyond the chest exercises noted on day 1 of this week. All other exercises, with the exception of abs, remained virtually the same. As for abs, I did 30 reps instead of 25 on the first two sets of each exercise then 25x/set for rest.

The progress noted in the chest exercises yesterday did not materialize today with the back and triceps exercises. All numbers remain identical :(

It’s ok though. I’ll keep on going.
