Summary:

Oscar (voiced by Will Smith) is a small fish, who works at the ‘Whale Wash’ with his friend Angel (voiced by Renee Zellweger). He is a ‘nobody’, with dreams of making it big and becoming ‘somebody’ on the upper side of the reef. On the other side of the ocean lives Don Lino (Robert De Niro), the God Father of all Sharks, with plans to leave the family business to his two sons, Frankie and Lenny. But Lenny is a kind, vegetarian, shark. One day, an anchor kills Frankie while he was trying to capture Oscar so the latter grabs this opportunity and takes credit for the death of the big, bad shark and gets notoriously known as the ‘Shark Slayer’. His lies will take him places he was longing for only to discover and appreciate what he is leaving behind.

Review:

Shark Tale is a ‘Dream Work’ production and I felt I was watching a TV sitcom inspired by ‘Finding Nemo’. The environment although different from ‘Finding Nemo’ lacks the element of surprise, the plot is predictable and even the characters lack originality. None of them truly sticks with you as memorable characters. The movie is a series of catchy scenes but its lack continuity.

Nevertheless, it is still enjoyable to watch for many other reasons. The animation in Shark Tale is super fast, full of bright colors and meticulously detailed. There are lots of funny moments in the movie and lovers of Mafia movies such as the Godfather will have a ride at this movie.

I felt this movie is aiming for an older audience. It contains too many adult jokes and innuendoes for kids to follow. For example, Lenny is a Shark who is a closet vegetarian and likes to dress like a whale. Here is a shark with major identity and sexual orientation crisis- not kids material.

The casting in this animation is brilliant. Will Smith, voicing Oscar, gets across the screen his witty and fast sense of humor, Renee Zellweger is perfect for the sweet and modest Angel, Angelina Jolie voices with perfection the sexy, manipulative, money loving Lola, and who would better voice ‘the Don’ than Mr. De Niro himself. Sykes being the fish version of Martin Scorsese is hilarious.

The soundtrack with Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliot is very lively and upbeat.
Shark tale is full of beautiful imagery, quick jokes, and a great voice cast but the story lacks originality and depth. 6.5/10
