Fiber have significant health benefits and are an essential and necessary component of any healthy eating regimen. Fiber are undigested carbohydrates that course through the digestive system without being absorbed into the blood. They course in and out and do not contribute any energy.

The numerous health benefits of fiber include:

Fiber prevent constipation and hemorrhoids: As fiber transit through the digestive system, they absorb lots of water and make it easier for food to pass through. This translates into regular soft bowel movements which in turn prevent constipation and hemorrhoids.

Fiber help weight loss: The more fiber is in a meal, the greater portion of that meal that is dragged out with fiber prior to it being absorbed in the blood. This translates to less calorie intake and thus less fat deposit.

Fiber Protect against cancer: Eating fiber speeds up passage of food in the bowels and accordingly many harmful substances are removed before sticking to bowel walls. High fiber diet is considered protective against colon cancer as well as other cancers linked to bad dietary habits such as breast, uterine, and ovarian cancer.

Fiber protect against insulin resistance and diabetes: The presence of good amount of fiber in a meal leads to slow rate absorption of sugar in the blood and subsequently a limited release of insulin. This in turn confers significant benefits in both preventing and reversing Insulin Resistance. Similarly, dietary fiber helps in blood sugar control in diabetics leading to lower antiglycemic drug doses.

Fiber protect against diverticular disease and diverticulitis: Diverticulae are small outpouches in the bowel wall that may develop into serious problems such as bowel cancer or diverticulitis (a serious bowel infection). Many studies have shown a strong protective benefit for fiber against the development of these diverticulae.

Fiber protect the heart High fiber diets have been shown to lower cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar, and other harmful substances that are linked to heart disease.

Other documented health benefits of fiber include prevention against gallstones and kidney stones.

Fiber is essential and super beneficial and it is not as hard to find as people tend to think…. You can find fiber in many our our meals and food:

    – Cereal: Read the labels, a lot of cereals are high in Fiber. Just a small note, most cereal are also high in sugar so do not opt for fibre and ignore the sugar intake, try to balance…I have found Kashi Go lean a good cereal, tasty and healthy, there is also Fiber one that is all about fiber!!! Bran cereal are high in fiber.

    – Oatmeal is high in Fiber (watch the sugar though)
    – The Berry Family is rich in fibre; Strawberries, blueberries, rasberries…
    – Whole wheat Bread
    – Beans (hummos)
    – Apples
    – Oranges

These are but of few examples of a few food groups and fruits that are rich in fiber
